Coming to india
Hello and congratulations on your exciting decision to come to India to train in Ayurvedic Yoga Massage.
Traveling to India can be a mix of excitement and apprehension, especially if it's your first time. To make your travel and stay in India more enjoyable and hassle-free, here are some helpful tips and information.
Finding Affordable Flights to India
When searching for flights to India, we recommend using websites like Skyscanner.com or Kayak.com. Since you'll be heading to Goa, a smaller state in India, it's best to search for flights to major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, or Bangalore as your initial point of entry. From there, you can easily find affordable domestic flights to Goa (GOI) or the newer airport at Mandahar / Mopa ( GOX) . Another option is to fly to a major hub in the UAE, such as Sharjah, and then take a direct flight to Goa with Air Arabia. This can be a convenient and cost-effective choice.
Tui Airlines & Air India also offer direct flights to GOX airport in Goa.
Please note that flight prices can vary depending on factors like airline situations, airport restrictions, oil prices, and peak travel seasons. Generally, round trip flights to India can range from €500 to €800.
Visas
For many nationalities, India offers 30-day on-arrival E-visas. The process to obtain these visas is simple and can be done online through the official website evisasindia.org. However, if your country is not listed on the E-visa scheme, you may need to obtain a paper visa from your local Indian embassy. You can search for the nearest Indian embassy to you and apply for a visa appointment.
If you plan to travel around India after your training, it may be beneficial to opt for a paper visa as it can be issued for up to 6 months. It's recommended to give yourself around 15 working days for the visa application process.
Getting to Your Training Center
Once you arrive in India, getting to your training center is easy. You can easily find government taxis at the airport's taxi stand. Look for a government-registered taxi bureau before exiting the airport to ensure a safe and reliable mode of transportation.
What to Pack
India is a modern country with plenty of shopping options, so don't worry if you forget something. However, it's advisable to pack light and smart.
Here are some essentials to consider:
- Mosquito repellent and a small first aid kit
- Cool, non-synthetic clothing suitable for hot weather
- Layers for cooler temperatures, especially if you plan to visit the mountains
- Long, loose pants that cover your knees and ankles for temple visits and smaller villages
- Sarong or scarf to cover your head or shoulders if required
- Any necessary prescriptions (which can also be refilled in India in most cases)
- High absorbency towel (though towels are provided the center)
- Comfortable walking shoes
Staying Healthy & Safe
To stay healthy while in India, there are a few precautions you can take:
- Eat cooked food in busy restaurants and avoid salads, especially in lower-end establishments.
- Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer before eating.
- Stay hydrated with fresh coconut water, plenty of water, and electrolyte-balancing ORS packs in high temperatures.
- Consult your local travel clinic for information on standard vaccines for travelers to India.
- Discuss the need for malaria tablets with your doctor, though Goa is a low-risk area during the season (winter).
- Apply common sense and follow safety precautions similar to those in your home country.
Respecting the Culture
India is generally open-minded and welcoming to travelers. When visiting holy sites like mosques, churches, or temples, it's important to dress modestly. For both men and women, this means covering your shoulders and knees, and in some cases, your hair. In Goa, beachwear is acceptable on the beach, but if you travel to more conservative regions, it's appreciated to dress modestly out of respect for local customs and traditions.
Getting Around India
India has an extensive train network that covers the entire country. Traveling by train is a recommended option, especially in 1st or 2nd AC class for privacy and comfort. Private taxis are also a good option for long distances. Websites like makemytrip.com can help you book travel within India. Additionally, it's advisable to use reputable travel companies and register with your embassy upon arrival in India.
Language
India has a multitude of languages, with Hindi being the most widely spoken. English is spoken by more than 10% of the population, so communication is usually not an issue. In Goa, English is commonly spoken, and the local language is Konkani. Many signs have English translations, making it easier for travelers to navigate.
Cuisine
Indian cuisine is diverse and flavorful, offering a variety of options for vegetarians, vegans, and meat-eaters alike. Vegetarians and vegans will find plenty of choices, as plant-based meals are prevalent in India. In Goa, seafood is also a popular local specialty due to its coastal location.
Weather
The best time to travel to India is between October and April, before the summer heat and monsoon season. In Goa, temperatures during this period range from 28-34 degrees Celsius.
We hope this information helps you prepare for your incredible journey to India. It's an experience that will leave a lasting impression. Enjoy your training as an Ayurvedic Yoga Massage therapist!
